Watch Spotting: Premier League Champion Virgil Van Dijk Wearing A Patek Philippe Aquanaut Ref. 5168G

In case you need a refresher, the 5168G was released at Baselworld 2019 to a ton of hype. This is the first mainline Aquanaut with a green dial, and it came on the heels of the nearly-impossible-to-find 5167A, a 40mm steel Aquanaut with matching green dial and strap. When Stephen wrote that original story, the only auction result he could find for a green 5167A was from 2015, when one sold at Sotheby’s for CHF 52,500. The 5168G is a very different watch though, despite looking similar on a computer screen. It’s significantly larger at 42.2mm across, and that case is made of solid white gold, giving it a lot more heft. This is still a sport watch, but it’s a more indulgent, precious take on that form. It had previously been available in an all-blue limited edition that was released in 2017 to celebrate the Aquanaut’s 20th birthday, but this new green variation is part of the main collection.
