Weekend Round-Up: Brain Boosters, Psychohistory, And A Japanese Fixer-Upper

One of the things many of us are probably thinking about more often than not these days. is the idea of Getting Away From It All – and maybe not just by taking a few days out of town for some well-deserved R&R, I mean really getting away from it all. Via CNN, I invite you all to check out a story about an American couple living in Japan, who decided to find a country home for themselves away from the urban sprawl of Tokyo, where both were working as teachers in international schools. While in general real-estate prices in Japan are quite high, a country kominka – the term for a traditional, wood-frame Japanese home with sliding shoji screens – can be had for almost shockingly low prices. If you’re willing to work with some of the idiosyncrasies of such a house (they can be very cold in winter, for example) and you’re not averse to a fixer-upper, you can make a home for yourself of unsurpassed spaciousness, grace, and beauty. Check out the story for one of the worst cases of home envy you’ll ever have.
